Where prices are lower
Older buildings, inland areas and cities away from the beach generally cost less per square foot than oceanfront towers. See our price guide and the search under $500,000 and compare areas.
Check the monthly total
A low price with high HOA, special assessments or insurance can cost more per month than a higher-priced condo. Ask for the budget, reserves and recent assessments.
Older buildings
Check the milestone inspection report, roof, plumbing and the association's finances. Some lenders limit loans in buildings with problems or high investor ownership.
55+ communities
Age-restricted communities can be cheaper, but have rules on who can live there and often on renting. Read the rules before you buy.
